Tiber overlook parks

New parks planned to regenerate the Roman riverfront

Project Description

Roma Capitale is implementing a program of regeneration interventions along the Tiber River that will lead to the creation of a large linear park. The aim is to connect the river with the city, making it accessible, and to enhance the very rich tree heritage of the banks to form an ecological corridor of fundamental importance for the city’s biodiversity and environmental quality. Naturalistic interventions, creation of play and educational areas, fitness trails, new bike paths and connections with existing trails, relaxation and picnic areas are planned. These interventions are in addition to those already carried out at the Magliana River Park and Ponte Marconi. There are six Tiber Overlook Parks under construction with Jubilee 2025 and administration funds:

  1. Overlook Park – Nature Oasis between Ponte Milvio and Ponte Flaminio in the floodplain area of the right bank of the Tiber River, with a total investment of about 1 million euros. The area, of about 6.5 hectares, is currently almost completely inaccessible and degraded due to the presence of squatter settlements and has great potential for naturalistic enhancement. Among the planned interventions are vegetation clearing and reforestation, arrangement of access to the area and placement of oasis signage, and the creation of two overlook belvederes and a gathering area with a view toward Ponte Milvio.
  1. Overlook Park – Naturalistic area at Lungotevere delle Navi (former WWF oasis) on the left bank Lungotevere delle Navi, between Ponte Risorgimento and Ponte Matteotti. The intervention through a grant of approximately 800 thousand euros will allow the redevelopment of an area of important naturalistic value, with an extension of 1.6 hectares, for a long time WWF Oasis and recently declared a Natural Monument, has as a priority objective the usability and accessibility, also with regard to the educational profile, through the construction of removable structures, made exclusively with natural materials, combining the criteria of environmental and landscape sustainability with minimal interventions that aim to implement the aesthetic value of the area and its very usability and livability.
In addition to vegetation reclamation, clearings, an overlook lookout and small docks for canoes are planned with the aim of enhancing the landscape and environmental distinctiveness of the area and making it attractive to citizens.
  1. Foro ltalico overlook park, on the right bank in the floodplain area between Ponte Milvio and Ponte Duca d’Aosta. In the area, which has an extension of about 2 hectares, with a total allocation of 2 million euros it is planned to build facing squares equipped with seating, regeneration of the tree stock and arrangement of paths.
  1. Overlook park at the confluence of the Tiber and Aniene rivers, in the area between Via del Foro Italico and Acqua Acetosa. With funding of about 2 million euros, the interventions include the environmental rehabilitation and reclamation of an area of about 8 hectares that has aspects of rare landscape value and connects to the urban natural systems of Monte Antenne and Villa Ada Park. Two new accesses, a bicycle nature trail and a network of pedestrian paths will be created. In addition, areas with exercise equipment and play spaces for children will be set up. The interventions also include the construction of new tree-lined draining parking lots, landscaping of the existing escarpment with shrubby vegetation, and the service driveway descent.
  1. Overlook park of ancient Ostia. The intervention, which involves an area on the left bank of the Tiber of about 5.5 hectares overlooking the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park, has as its priority objective to ensure the accessibility and enjoyment of the places in safety, respecting the environmental, historical and landscape values present. With an investment of more than 1.5 million euros, it is planned to build new pedestrian and bicycle paths on the embankment, scenic resting points, equipped areas for wildlife observation, and overlook piers on the river. New rows of trees will be planted and the landing stage for tourist boats connecting Ostia Antica to the Tiberis/Ponte Marconi area will be renovated.
  2. Tiberis Overlook Park, the intervention covers an area of about 2 hectares and aims to enhance its characteristics as a recreational and sports space. The project to transform it into a permanent park, with a total funding of 1,180,000 euros, involves the construction of a terraced square that can be used in summer with various water features and, in winter, can be used as a meeting square or for the staging of markets and events. The interventions include the construction of paving in draining materials with water features using water recirculation systems from the network of ‘noses,’ the installation of a removable kiosk with toilets expanded from the summer one with a module to be made available to associations for meetings or small parties in the winter period. The beach volleyball courts will be completely renovated and a fitness and dog area, a bocce court will be built. The beach area will also be upgraded and new fixed furniture set up. The project also includes the planting of new trees and shrubs and the redevelopment of natural lawn areas. The boat dock will, finally, be renovated to facilitate the connection between Ponte Marconi and Ostia Antica.
