ReGreenaration

The next generation of green, resilient and socially inclusive smart cities

ReGreenaration is a project funded by the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation program to test solutions for regenerating selected blighted neighborhoods toward climate resilience, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and implementing urban ecosystem improvement actions.

Project Description

Four pathfinder cities-Paris (FR), Barcelona (ES), Alverca (PT), Bucharest (RO)-followed by the five replicator cities Rome (IT), Ghent (BE), Ljubljana (SL), Segrate (IT), and Lappeeranta (FI).

The aim of the project is to create replicable models of sustainable livability of high-density housing centers and resilience in the face of climate crisis. Strategies for redeveloping suburbs will be studied (Bucharest, Paris), methodologies for capturing carbon, making mobility more sustainable, improving water management, preserving biodiversity, preventing damage caused by extreme weather events (Alverca, Barcelona, Paris), efforts will be made to involve local actors in the maintenance of green areas (all nine cities), and best practices will be chosen to be replicated in other European territories by defining the best investment and governance model (Rome, Ghent, Ljubljana, Segrate, Lappeenranta).

What Rome does through the project

Roma Capitale is allocated €230,125.00 and the area designated for redevelopment is a large green area that is located between Tufello and Vigne Nuove and that, due to ownership problems, was not designed as a public park and was not used by citizens. Now thanks to the aforementioned project it is possible to plan the transformation of the empty area into one of the first 5 microforests planned in the City of 15 minutes (link from Rome Capital website), the pedestrian connection between north and south will be improved and parking areas reduced, demonstrating how urban regeneration based on green choices has the potential to achieve concretely measurable quality goals in terms of residents’ health and environmental quality.
