Accelerating Systemic Climate Adaptation Across Europe through Integrated Ecosystems of Resilience Solutions

The SystR project aims to propose a revolutionary approach to nurture the link between science and policy with innovative solutions to address systemic risks through the creation of interconnections between multiple sectors and stakeholders and consequent cascading climate impacts.

Project Description

The SystR project aims to provide a number of innovative outcomes, including:

  1. An adaptation support tool aimed at the systemic adaptation process
  2. A community empowerment framework to actively mobilize a diversity of actors along the value chain in the development and testing of transformative solutions tailored to address local systemic and climate vulnerabilities and risks
  3. New systemic governance schemes to improve cooperation at multiple scales
  4. Consistent financial roadmaps to determine how to fund identified resilience solutions and strategies
  5. Design, with the support of digital visualization tools, and implement an integrated ecosystem of resilience solutions, integrating cross-sectoral systemic enabling and physical solutions, including NBS (Nature-Based Solutions)
  6. Accelerate the adoption of its results to create critical mass, through SystR’s upscaling toolbox and results aggregator one-stop shop

Overall, SystR will demonstrate systemic resilience in three of Europe’s most representative contexts: coastal in Guadeloupe-France, rural in Bystrica-Slovakia, and urban in Rome-Italy, which will be twinned with replication sites of similar challenges-Galicia, Strasbourg, and Egaleo, respectively.

What Rome does through the project

In Rome, the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS) blue to reduce the urban heat island has shown potential but remains limited by a narrow focus on site-specific interventions.Through this project, Roma Capitale will implement Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Urban Blue Infrastructure, such as rainwater harvesting systems strategically placed in areas with high concentrations of vulnerable populations, reducing the Urban Heat Island effect and providing much-needed cooling. One particularly innovative approach will involve the reuse of Rome’s iconic public fountains. Further identification of areas available for future replication will be conducted with ASUD, using physical and social criteria. Evidence gathered on the benefits of NBS will be the basis for strengthening the business model around these solutions. Existing fluid governance schemes will allow testing of public-private partnerships and systematization of sectoral policies and urban disaster and tourism risk management plans.
