Centocelle Park

Redevelopment and creation of a large urban park

Project Description

The project aims to return to the city a large green area that plays an environmentally important role for a large urban area. The area used to house a military airfield and car wrecking activities; the intervention includes reclamation and landscaping, with the creation of new services and sports and recreational facilities.

The redevelopment project focuses on two key aspects: forestation, with increased tree density and the planting of new trees to define a new edge of the Park, and the reorganization of paths and accesses to reconnect the Park to the City and the various surrounding neighborhoods(Quadraro Don Bosco, Alessandrino, Tuscolano, Centocelle, Prenestino Labicano).

The initial phase of the project will include the planting of about 500 trees to create an “urban forest” and the installation of a dedicated play area for children. At the same time, the executive project will be implemented to create new paths and accesses, including those on Via di Centocelle, Viale Togliatti and Via Santi Romano. The second phase plans to expand the current extension of the Park and to build major new facilities, affecting an area of about 52 hectares.

Activities will include the construction of a large Playground, reusing the existing 350-meter runway to place basketball, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and athletic lanes. With the same philosophy, a Park Square is planned as a multifunctional space to accommodate performances, events, outdoor educational activities, study/reading, temporary markets, cinema, etc.

A water plaza is planned within the plaza, with a fountain, where people can cool off and get wet through the presence of water splashes and vaporized water that allows people to cool off in summer periods. The creation of a Park Square at the main entrance on Casilina Street, with an interactive fountain, will be planned. Entrances and information graphics will be designed to make the Park easily identifiable.

The abandoned railway track will be reclaimed as a botanical and bicycle promenade, with access to the underground tunnels through new entrances and guided tours. The abandoned railway cut will be enhanced as a “natural monument” of remarkable biodiversity, offering additional significant spaces within the Park.
