Roma Capitale is implementing a strong tramway revitalization project in Rome with the aim of strengthening public transport through zero-emission electric mobility systems. Work is being financed and awarded for the construction of 31 kilometers of new lines, which will be added to the 32 kilometers that exist today. The lines that will have modern technical features, with a peak hour frequency of 4 minutes, are: Palmiro Togliatti (8 kilometers, along the avenue, connecting stations of metro lines A, B, C and the regional FL2 line); Tiburtina-Verano Station (1.3 kilometers allowing the station to connect with lines already in operation and as the first section of the line along Via Tiburtina); TVA, Termini-Vatican-Aurelio (8.3 kilometers connecting central nodes of urban mobility through the historic center); Termini-Giardinetti-Tor Vergata (12.9 kilometers, from Termini Station along Casilina to connect with Tor Vergata University and Hospital).
In addition, technical and economic feasibility projects, necessary to apply for funding from the Ministry of Infrastructure, are proceeding for seven new tramways totaling 37 kilometers designed to create a highly integrated network with metro stations and regional railways: Piazza Mancini- Vigna Clara Station, Anagnina-Tor Vergata-Torre Angela, Giadinetti-Tor Vergata-Scambiatore A1 South, Marconi-Appia Antica-Subaugusta, Tiburtina-Ponte Mammolo, Via Barletta- Viale Angelico-Piazzale Clodio, Viale Angelico-Ponte della Musica-Auditorium.
In addition, the tender for the supply of 121 two-way streetcars was awarded, with an initial application contract for the delivery of 40 streetcars that will be used to renew the existing tram fleet. The new vehicles will have a length of 33.5 meters and will accommodate up to 215 passengers. There will be 68 seats and two stations for the disabled, who will also be able to take advantage of platforms for boarding and all the modern equipment that will make their journey comfortable. The streetcars are equipped with air conditioning, video surveillance systems, public address sound for announcements, and passenger counters.
