The monitoring of environmental and climate data<\/strong> affecting the Rome area now plays a fundamental role in understanding ongoing processes<\/strong>, the impacts of climate change, verifying the effectiveness of policies and updating objectives and priorities for action.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Climate Adaptation Strategy Monitoring Platform<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Rome’s Climate Adaptation Strategy<\/strong><\/a> has identified priorities<\/strong>, objectives<\/strong> and measures<\/strong> to prepare the city for the scenario of impacts<\/strong> already underway and those that may intensify as a consequence of global warming processes.<\/p>

One of the most important measures to accompany the Strategy’s implementation pathway is the creation of a monitoring system<\/strong> with the objective of understanding the evolution of ongoing processes through the identification of a system of climate indicators<\/strong> – in line with the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change<\/strong><\/em> (PNACC<\/strong>) – and to define a climate profiling<\/strong> that can support adaptation activities and understand which ones need to be adapted and implemented.<\/p>

The first Climate Monitoring Report of the City of Rome,<\/strong> <\/a>presented on June 25, 2025,<\/strong><\/em> is the result of a technical and scientific collaboration with the CMCC Foundation<\/strong><\/em> (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change).<\/strong> It was created with the goal of supporting the Municipality in developing effective tools to address the challenges of climate change adaptation<\/strong> in the urban environment. The creation of a regularly updated online platform makes it possible to analyze the risks associated with climate change and to explore<\/strong>, in an interactive way, the various data and indicators<\/strong> of the municipal area. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Hydrogeological risk and water management<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The River Basin Authority of the Central Apennines (AUBAC)<\/strong> <\/em><\/strong>provides, on its website<\/strong><\/a>, data and indicators of great interest for understanding<\/strong> the ongoing processes in Rome and in the municipalities of the Metropolitan City. In particular, the digital twin<\/strong><\/em> allows users to access maps, data, and information related <\/strong>to hydrogeological risk planning<\/em> (landslides, flood risks, and areas affected by wildfires), the protection and management of water resources<\/em><\/strong> (river basins, major water withdrawals, chemical and ecological status of water bodies), as well as climatic and hydrological conditions used to forecast water severity scenarios<\/em><\/strong> across the entire district. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mobile microclimate monitoring in Rome<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Thanks to the collaboration<\/strong> <\/span>between Roma Capitale, ISAC-CNR and ATAC<\/strong>, a microclimatic monitoring programme<\/em><\/strong> has been launched using a network of sensors capable of mapping with a resolution of just a few tens of metres. The trial, which began in August 2024, involved the installation of a patented multi-sensor weather device<\/strong> designed for use on the move (MeteoTracker<\/em>) on the roofs of 20 ATAC buses<\/strong>, capable of measuring 10 weather parameters every 5 seconds. The data is georeferenced and sent to the cloud in real time<\/strong>, and can be viewed, also in real time, on a specially designed interactive map<\/strong>. The mobile network generates a stream of around 80,000 measurements per day, totalling, to date, approximately 38 million. The research carried out by ISAC-CNR is enabling the identification \u2013 in terms of the extent and quantification of thermal anomalies \u2013 of urban areas particularly exposed to the urban heat island effect<\/strong><\/strong> and, conversely, the beneficial effect of trees and urban parks. This information is invaluable for the adoption of effective measures to adapt to climate change. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
